OCEAN EXPEDITIONS

From the tropical waters of the Caribbean to the icy reaches of the Arctic

Explore The West-North Coast of Spitsbergen
Sail among the glaciers, fjords, and rugged peaks of Svalbard’s spectacular northwest coast aboard the expedition yacht S/Y Quest.
Step aboard in the heart of the Arctic and set out to discover one of the planet’s most remote and captivating island groups. This voyage offers a rare chance to experience Svalbard as few ever do—navigating fjords, tracing the edges of ancient glaciers, and witnessing a landscape shaped by ice and time.
With an expert guide on board, you’ll gain deeper insight into the region’s dramatic ice formations—past, present, and future.
Your Sailing Grounds — Svalbard, Norway
Perched high above the Arctic Circle between mainland Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard is one of the last great wildernesses of Europe. Dutch explorers first named these islands Spitsbergen — “pointed peaks” — for the dramatic mountains rising from the sea. This is the “land of the midnight sun,” where from June to late August the archipelago is bathed in golden light around the clock. A place of towering mountains, sweeping glaciers, and ice-carved fjords — and where polar bears outnumber people.
Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, Svalbard’s west and north coasts remain relatively ice-free in summer, allowing S/Y Quest to sail deep into this fragile yet awe-inspiring environment. Travel here is tightly regulated, and we sail with an experienced Arctic captain and certified guides so you can explore safely and responsibly.

History, Culture & Wildlife
The northwest of Svalbard is rich with human history — from 16th-century whalers to 20th-century polar expeditions. We may visit storied fjords such as Kongsfjorden, Krossfjorden, and Magdalenefjorden, pass the great glacier fronts of Monacobreen and Lilliehöökbreen, or drop anchor near old trapper huts that whisper of Arctic winters past. Wildlife is everywhere — from walrus and seals to Arctic foxes, reindeer, and countless seabirds. With luck, we may even spot a polar bear.

Highlights
Exploration, Nature & Wildlife
With only a small group of six passengers onboard, Quest offers unparalleled access to remote fjords and ice edges. Every day brings the chance to encounter polar bears, walruses hauled out on beaches, Arctic foxes, reindeer grazing tundra slopes, and whales or seals surfacing beside the ship.
Shore Landings
Whether cruising beneath glaciers or landing ashore at abandoned whaling stations and trappers’ cabins, our excursions bring you face‑to‑face with a timeless wilderness. Optional hikes deepen your connection to Svalbard’s rugged landscapes. Walk across tundra, cruise grand glaciers, and keep watch for walruses, reindeer, seals, whales, and soaring seabirds.
Flexible, Expedition-Driven Itineraries
Guided by ice and weather, our routes are designed to maximize wildlife encounters and breathtaking scenes—from the pack ice edge to hidden bays like Samarinvågen or Andréetangen, where walruses bask and seabirds teem.
Expert Knowledge & Onboard Enrichment
Each voyage includes daily briefings and lectures by our expedition guide — who illuminate the Arctic’s geology, ecology, and conservation challenges. Connect with the Arctic through guided talks, nature memories, and shared experiences. Learn the stories of explorers and scientific outposts as you sip hot tea against panoramic glacial backdrops.
Expedition Team & Hands-On Sailing
Discover the thrill of joining the crew in hoisting sails, navigating, and watch-keeping. You do not need to have prior sailing experience as our crew will guide you every step of the way, whether you want to be fully immersed or simply relax and just take in the view from the deck.
Chef-Prepared Cuisine
While you enjoy exploring Spitsbergen our onboard chef prepares three meals a day, inspired by Scandinavian traditions and local ingredients.

Sample Itinerary — Spitsbergen with S/Y Quest
This outline is an example of what your journey might look like. Every voyage is unique, shaped by nature and the moment.
Day 1 – Welcome to Longyearbyen
Arrive in Svalbard’s main town, where the midnight sun casts golden light over the mountains. Step aboard S/Y Quest, meet the crew and fellow explorers, and settle into your cabin. After a safety briefing, we set sail into Isfjorden, perhaps making our first anchorage near the dramatic cliffs of Alkhornet. Keep your binoculars handy — seabirds and Arctic foxes often greet our arrival.
Day 2 – Into the Fjords
We chart a course north, sailing between the rugged coast of Prins Karls Forland and the mainland of Spitsbergen. Depending on conditions, we may explore Krossfjorden or Lilliehöökfjorden, where towering glacier walls calve icebergs into the sea.
Day 3 – Magdalenefjorden & Polar History
This fjord’s turquoise waters and sharp peaks made it a base for 17th-century whalers and later Arctic expeditions. We’ll step ashore to trace this layered history, then continue deeper into the fjords of the northwest.
Days 4–5 – The Remote North
Venturing along the north coast, we may enter Raudfjorden, Liefdefjorden, or Bockfjorden — places where reindeer graze, seals rest on ice floes, and the occasional polar bear roams. Weather and ice permitting, we’ll collect fresh glacier ice for cocktails aboard Quest’s deck as the evening sun paints the mountains in warm light.
Day 6 – Science & Settlements
We head south towards Ny-Ålesund, the world’s northernmost research community, with its intriguing blend of science and Arctic heritage. If conditions allow, we might also call at Barentsburg, a Russian mining settlement with a distinctive atmosphere.
Day 7 – Barentsburg – A Russian Outpost in the Arctic
On our way back towards Longyearbyen, we may stop at Barentsburg, the Russian mining town on Svalbard. Home to around 350 inhabitants, mostly Russian and Ukrainian, it feels like stepping into another world with its Soviet-era buildings, Cyrillic street signs, and even a statue of Lenin watching over the settlement. Once a bustling coal mining hub, Barentsburg today offers a glimpse of living history — part working town, part cultural curiosity — complete with a brewery and welcoming locals.
We sail back towards Longyearbyen, exploring one last anchorage along the way — perhaps a hidden bay known for walrus haul-outs or a glacier front perfect for a final zodiac cruise.
Day 8 – Farewell, Svalbard
After breakfast, we return to port. Disembark with memories of ice, wildlife, and endless Arctic daylight.
